How great leaders inspire action | Simon Sinek

Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question “Why?” His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers — and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.

  • He calls it the Golden Circle and then links it to biology and neuroscience. Nah uh thats a no-no. Organizations exist to make money. So he is saying theres some extra cause other than that? Like what? Exactly its money.

  • The video is meta-proof of these concepts.

It was grainy, dated filming, bad microphone and yet we stuck around to be inspired by Simon and what he wanted to say.

Just wanted to point out the meta nature of that.

  • Great talk, but his 'start with why' book was terrible. He utters the same platitudes over and over for 300 pages and hangs on too much on the cliche idea 'be original'.
For example, he says Apple Inc. is successful because they are so original, i.e. they don't just copy and refine, they truly "innovate."
But Southwest Airlines totally copied and refined Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) including the name, the concept, even the stewardesses in the go-go boots, and PSA the true innovator is long gone while Southwest thrives.
So he just cherry-picks examples that fit his narrative and ignore that doesn't.

  • Even though his analysis on marketing is true, the reason why most people purchase APPLE products is because they are simply superior. They are integrated with each other and provide great service and quality. How they develop products is worlds apart from everything else, in my opinion. So you have to have superior products and services to reach the status that APPLE has. If you sell it with marketing but the product doesn't match the marketing, word of mouth will kill your business quicker than your marketing plan will grow your business.
