Army Field Watch Shootout 2016: Seiko vs Citizen

Seiko Field Watch OD Men’s SNE095P2 (shown):
Citizen Field Watch OD BM8180-03E (shown):
Timex Field Watch (very clean, simple, effective, affordable, various colors):
Hamilton Field Watch HML-H69419363 (over twice the price of these but nice, day only, Khaki):
Hamilton H74451833 Khaki Field Analog (actually very nice, reasonably priced):
The Excellent NAVIFORCE $15 Japaness mvt watch (shown):

A combat field watch has history. It was used in World War II and many other conflicts. Its pedigree means this: it tough, slim, easy to read, simple, and accurate. Enter two super high value field watches that combat each other here. Each hails from superb Japanese watch makers: Seiko and Citizen. Each is SOLAR POWERED positioning them above any other automatic or manual field watch [for me]. They will run for 10 years before needing a battery! Each has the military look including olive drab nylon bands. The specifics such as crown, bezel, stem, markings, lume, second hand precision, and value are examined. In the end the winners takes the race by the narrowest of margins. Each is a phenomenal and smart field watch choice.

  • Good looking watch. Comfortable✹✹>わg   and not oversized like most watches nowadays. I just wish it had manual winding and hacking

  • Yeah, that second hand needs to line up. That would drive me nuts at any price range.

  • Casio for me, no contest. Better build quality/reliability, clearer face, excellent lume and 5 year guarantee – oh and I can by at least four different design NATO straps as it is much cheaper than the Seiko.

  • Just bought the Seiko after seeing your review. Excellent watch for the money, thanks for the comprehensive comparison.

  • I typically prefer the citizen eco drive for the practicality, power reserve, etc. And looked at these 2 watches, and I went with the seiko snzg15j1 for 1 simple reason. EMP. Tongue in cheek of course, but an emp would kill the citizen, where the seiko would survive and carry on as it's an automatic.

    Which is better of both????
To me Citizen, is a watch more heavy than Seiko…

  • In my many experiences Seiko is much more reliable watch than Citizen as far as watch/keeping time goes.

  • Unpopular Opinion: I don't think stock watch bands matter at all. Unless it's a bracelet (and even then) I immediately chuck the factory strap and use my assortment of nylon NATOs. Just have to make sure I only buy watches with 20mm or 22mm lugs. If it was up to me I'd buy just the head in a cardboard box and pocket the money they spend on cheap bands and fancy boxes.

  • Sub dials aren't a new function on watches even though. Some of the earliest watches made, going back to the seventeenth century, had Sub dials. Watch wearers have constantly been excited by the idea gathering more records than merely the approximate time from their watches:

  • The skeletonized hands on the Citizen have kept me from buying it. If those were changed to more traditional sword hands it would win hands down!

  • The only thing stopping me from buying that seiko watch is that ugly bezel which also seems to do nothing.

  • I've been looking for a decent military style field watch since my Seiko 5 (SNK). That thing just doesn't tell time properly. Probably not gonna bother with budget mechanicals anymore.

  • I have had two of these BM8180s citizen watches for around 15 years , one for workshop and knock around use and the second for casual wear. That is getting old so I decided to buy another watch. I have always liked the eco-drive so I went on line and found a similar watch AW1410-24E, what sold me was the screw down crown. But not being a watch nerd ( meant in the nicest way) the diameter did not register with me. I have a large wrist 9.5 inch and the strap on this new watch is around an inch away from even touching the buckle. But that is not a problem as I am never going to wear it as it is so freaking enormous. I will give it away to a nephew and buy another BM 8180 and retire the more knocked around one .I suppose you could call my watches a very boring collection as they are all the same. all the best.
